1 Day in Alberobello, Italy

Updated: Mar 4, 2020

Alberobello is a trulli amazing little town in Southern Italy which is known for its unique trullo buildings. Wait, what’s a trullo?...

Here are 4 steps to a perfect stay in this cute town.

Step 1: Stay in a Trullo

A trullo is “a distinctive, small, dry-stone building with a conical roof” famous to this region of Italy and dates back to the 1300s. They have thick walls, cone-shaped roofs and are mostly made from limestone. To this day, people still live in their trullo homes.

I stayed in my own trullo via AirBnB, and definitely recommend you do the same if you ever go to Alberobello!

Step 2: Just Walk Around

The nice thing about Alberobello is that you don’t really need to make any plans at all; just walk around the UNESCO World Heritage Site. There is plenty to see hiding around every corner. And there are also plenty of touristy shops, if that’s your thing!

Some of the trulli have symbols painted on their roofs, which have religious or mystical references.

Look out for a hidden street that makes your wishes come true!

Seriously, how adorable is this place?

Step 3: Book Dinner Reservations

I learned the hard way that although Alberobello is a very small town, the restaurants fill up quickly at night. Make sure to book reservations in advance. Thankfully I still got to try some local wine!

Step 4: Take the Train from Bari

I also learned the hard way that the easiest way to get to Alberobello by train is from Bari. Instead, I tried catching a train from Taranto because of course we had to go to 'Taranto', and the trains just decided not to show up.

I was happy that I got there eventually. And instead of looking down, look up :)
