What’s the best way to cleanse yourself from the big city vibes of London? Take a (trip to) Bath!
My day trip to Bath was the perfect day of relaxation after moving to London. It’s only a 2.5-hour train ride away from the city, but it feels like a completely different place.
The Bath Vibe
All of the streets have beautiful, clean architecture. In every direction you turn, you can see a church rising above the skyline.
History of Bath
I started the day by visiting the Roman Baths. While the pictures may not look like much, at one time these baths were like a 5-star resort.
The baths were built on a natural hot spring which is still active today! But unfortunately, because the water has been exposed to so much bird poop and bacteria, we couldn’t go for a swim.
Apparently over the years, they’ve found some interesting things at the bottom of the baths, like a motor scooter, and the statue of Julius Caesar…
I walked through multiple rooms of baths – some for women, some for men, and this one shown above which was intended for socializing. They also had different temperatures of baths for different parts of the “cleansing process”.
This visit reminded me of how much influence the Romans have made on modern culture. It was crazy to think that we were taking pictures on our cell phones in the same place people bathed in 76AD!
Bath Food
After a mini history lesson, I went to visit the oldest house in Bath. It was a Victorian home that is now the baking grounds for Sally Lunn Buns. I had 1/2 a bun with blackcurrant jam (The Queen’s favourite).
The buns came with Etiquette Instructions, such as “The bun is usually eaten with a knife and fork” and “Most guests enjoy their buns with a huge smile on their face”. Obviously we followed this etiquette precisely.
A Walk in the Park
In the centre of the town, there’s a nice park with adorable red and white striped chairs. I found some flower gardens paying respect to the Queen’s 90th birthday. Unfortunately, no birthday cake was found.
Shops and Coffee
I spent the rest of the day walking around the streets, going into random shops like Vintage & Rare Guitars, listening to live music performers in the city square, and hanging out in a pub.
I ended the day looking out the second floor window of a coffee shop, watching a man feed pigeons.
