Bruges is a little town in Belgium where it is totally acceptable to have beer, chocolate, waffles and frites for all 3 meals in a day. Beyond the food, the town itself is adorable, romantic and the perfect weekend getaway from the hustle and bustle of London.
In summer of 2017, I took a short train to Bruges from London St. Pancras and indulged in all of the Belgian delights!
Here are my top three recommendations of what to do in Bruges.
1. Walk the Streets
With only two days in Bruges, I spent most of the time just walking around the streets. It’s a fairly small town, built around canals, so it’s easy to find your way around in no time.
The historic centre of Bruges is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
For the best walk, get outside the market square and follow the streets east and north to where you will find the true essence of Bruges without the tourists.
2. Take a Boat
There’s no better way to get the full experience of Bruges than a short canal tour through the town. The boat tour gives you a new perspective, along with little tidbits of history from your captain! It’s definitely worth the cheap admission and you can catch it from a few different spots in the city centre.
3. Have a Treat
Bruges is filled with all the treats that can fill your heart’s desires.
Beer
For the best selection of Beer, head to The Beer Wall – literally a giant wall of beer, with menus in about 5 languages hanging from the ceiling. I personally fell in love with a coconut beer – yes, coconut – served in a real coconut!
Chocolate
There are lots of chocolate shops, but perhaps our favourite one was The Chocolate Line. In this shop, you can actually watch how they make the chocolate, and read stories of the real people who worked on their plantations abroad.
Waffles
Waffles for breakfast, lunch and dinner? Yes please. I decided to get mine from oyya – oh yeahhhh – and had no regrets.
Frites
Belgian frites are a must-have snack for any time of day. Don’t forget to get some yummy dipping sauce, anything but ketchup!
