3 Days in Rome, Italy

Updated: Mar 4, 2020

Rome, Italy: the first stop in a 10-day Italian adventure in April.

I kicked it all off on Easter weekend with a full few days of Italian food, wine, Roman ruins, and dodging sweaty tourists in the sun.

Where the Tourists Go

A trip to Rome wouldn’t be complete without seeing all the main tourist sites. I booked a 6-hour tour for the Vatican, Colosseum and Roman Forum, as I did not want to spend half of the day waiting in a 3-4-or even 5 hour queue!

When surrounded by tourists – look up! …and look around! You might spot an Armenian… (below, a statue of Saint Gregory on St. Peter’s Basilica)

Many of the other tourist sites can be seen at your own pace on a self-guided walking tour, so I spent the second day doing just that. I hit up the Spanish Steps, Trevi Fountain, Pantheon, and Piazza Navona, and likely passed by some others on the way.

Where to Stay

I booked an AirBnB in Trastevere, “Rome’s favourite neighbourhood” according to Lonely Planet, which is on the opposite side of the Tiber River from all of the main tourist areas.

The nightlife is truly alive – with tons of restaurants open late, live musicians in the street, and people gathering together in the Piazza di Santa Maria.

Trastevere is a maze of tiny streets, not so distant from the rest of Rome, but somehow has more of a local charm that makes you feel at home. It’s a town for tourists and locals alike.

And on the way in to town, I saw the oldest bridge left standing in Rome – it’s pretty cool how earth has just grown right over it.

Where to Eat

Where should you eat in Rome? If you love Italian food, anywhere will probably be just fine! I ate my heart out on the three p’s (pizza, pasta, and panini), had plenty of wine, and made sure to get a daily dose of gelato. Very healthy, I know.

Two favourite meals: gelato for lunch from GIOLITTI, and a delicious homemade gnocchi from a family restaurant in Trastevere (not pictured – just imagine it).

When to Go

While Easter Weekend might be one of the busiest times to visit Rome, the weather was still perfect, the food was as delicious as always, and if you learn to find your place amongst the crowds it’s really not so bad. I wouldn’t have changed a thing!

Except stay a bit longer… but I had to get going to the next stop in Italy.
