Last spring, I went on a solo adventure from London, UK to Salzburg, Austria. Here's my story of the city, and some thoughts on whether or not travelling alone may be a good idea for you!
What should I do in Salzburg?
Salzburg is a small but vibrant little town in Austria. Most people will come here in the winter and hit the slopes, but there are many things to see and do within the town as well!
I highly recommend checking out the main street, Getreidegasse, and take nice long strolls along the river. You can also go to the main town square, Domplatz and check out Mozart's birth place too.
If you're a Sound of Music fan, you can explore some of the original film shoot locations right in the city, like Mirabell Gardens!
You can also climb a large hill, Kapuzinerberg, and get all the way up to the heights of the castle, with an amazing view of the city below.
What should I eat in Salzburg?
Mozart balls! Yes, Mozart balls. That is all.
Oh, the rest of the food in Austria is also pretty delicious. But eat the Mozart balls.
Ok, it all sounds nice. But should I travel solo?
There could be a lot of opinions of whether you should or shouldn't travel somewhere by yourself. Some people say it's "the most rewarding experience" and some people simply hate it.
When it comes down to it, it's a personal choice. I think the questions I would ask myself again would be: are you comfortable figuring out problems on your own? And, do you enjoy your freedom or are you heavily dependent on other people?
I travelled solo to Salzburg and learned to really love it; but it definitely came with some challenges. I spent the first day concerned about most things, like 'did I forget something', and as a female 'is it safe to walk down this street at night?'
I forgot my phone charger, and walked so much in my first day that my foot starting bleeding through my shoe. But, if you're comfortable figuring out solutions, you can get through things like this alone in a strange city with no problems :)
After 24 hours I felt completely at home, and more relaxed than ever before. It was actually really enlightening to make all of my own decisions, and live on my own timeline. I even felt more aware of my surroundings than when I travel with others.
The only thing I missed was having someone to share it with.
